Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge

When the mysterious fog of the Ruining crept over the world, the living died and the dead rose. Only the walled city of Viyara was left untouched.

The heirs of the city’s most powerful—and warring—families, Mahyanai Romeo and Juliet Catresou share a love deeper than duty, honor, even life itself. But the magic laid on Juliet at birth compels her to punish the enemies of her clan—and Romeo has just killed her cousin Tybalt. Which means he must die.

Paris Catresou has always wanted to serve his family by guarding Juliet. But when his ward tries to escape her fate, magic goes terribly wrong—killing her and leaving Paris bound to Romeo. If he wants to discover the truth of what happened, Paris must delve deep into the city, ally with his worst enemy . . . and perhaps turn against his own clan.

Mahyanai Runajo just wants to protect her city—but she’s the only one who believes it’s in peril. In her desperate hunt for information, she accidentally pulls Juliet from the mouth of death—and finds herself bound to the bitter, angry girl. Runajo quickly discovers Juliet might be the one person who can help her recover the secret to saving Viyara.

Both pairs will find friendship where they least expect it. Both will find that Viyara holds more secrets and dangers than anyone ever expected. And outside the walls, death is waiting. . .

this book is just so good. Gosh dang it these characters stole my freaking heart and then their author ripped it out and crushed it (and I'm still alive)
OH GOSH. where do I even start????? The world building in this was freaking incredible. It all felt fresh and original and gosh dang it I loved it. Rosamund's writing is just so good. It draws you in and her worlds wrap around you and her characters are people you'd either never want to meet(in a good way!) or people you want to be FREAKING BEST FRIENDS WITH. gosh dang it I want to be besties with Paris so bad right now.
Okay so the friendships in this. Can we just talk about them??? There are two main friendships. Romeo and Paris and Juliet and Runajo. Gosh dang it they murdered me. Romeo and Juliet are the main romance in the story but the cool this is that other than a omniscient scene every ten or so chapters, THEIR POVS ARE NOT USED. This was so cool. I adored it.
And the story. THE FREAKING STORY. It starts have fast-paced and doesn't slow down. It keeps you guessing and--gosh dang it--it doesn't disappoint!
So if you love magic and fantasy and friendship and romance and rich world building(come on who doesn't????) WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE??? GO READ THIS FREAKING BOOK.
(Regrettably it hasn't released yet so unless you have mad skills and got you hands on an ARC(like me) you can't read it until it releases. Also because my brain hates me I have no idea when this releases. Sorry!!)

Drugs/drinking - mild
Intimacy - kissing, mentions to two characters sleeping together, innuendos
Violence - this book is kind of dark and deals with human sacrifice and necromancy and the lines between death and life. Also there is murder and general stabbiness.
Cussing - I don't remember any?? There may be some.

  1. Sounds super interesting but kinda scary so I'll just take a pass.

  2. Oh... my... goodness. This book had me halfway through the description! I have to find a copy when it releases!!!

  3. Good morning, how are you?

My name is Emilio, I am a Spanish boy and I live in a town near to Madrid. I am a very interested person in knowing things so different as the culture, the way of life of the inhabitants of our planet, the fauna, the flora, and the landscapes of all the countries of the world etc. in summary, I am a person that enjoys traveling, learning and respecting people's diversity from all over the world.

I would love to travel and meet in person all the aspects above mentioned, but unfortunately as this is very expensive and my purchasing power is quite small, so I devised a way to travel with the imagination in every corner of our planet. A few years ago I started a collection of used stamps because through them, you can see pictures about fauna, flora, monuments, landscapes etc. from all the countries. As every day is more and more difficult to get stamps, some years ago I started a new collection in order to get traditional letters addressed to me in which my goal was to get at least 1 letter from each country in the world. This modest goal is feasible to reach in the most part of countries, but unfortunately, it is impossible to achieve in other various territories for several reasons, either because they are very small countries with very few population, either because they are countries at war, either because they are countries with extreme poverty or because for whatever reason the postal system is not functioning properly.

For all this, I would ask you one small favor:
Would you be so kind as to send me a letter by traditional mail from Liberia? I understand perfectly that you think that your blog is not the appropriate place to ask this, and even, is very probably that you ignore my letter, but I would call your attention to the difficulty involved in getting a letter from that country, and also I don’t know anyone neither where to write in Liberia in order to increase my collection. a letter for me is like a little souvenir, like if I have had visited that territory with my imagination and at same time, the arrival of the letters from a country is a sign of peace and normality and an original way to promote a country in the world. My postal address is the following one:

    Emilio Fernandez Esteban
Avenida Juan de la Cierva, 44
    28902 Getafe (Madrid)

If you wish, you can visit my blog where you can see the pictures of all the letters that I have received from whole World.

Finally, I would like to thank the attention given to this letter, and whether you can help me or not, I send my best wishes for peace, health and happiness for you, your family and all your dear beings.

    Yours Sincerely

    Emilio Fernandez
